Importance of Osteoporosis in Family History of Postmenopausal Osteoporotic Women - Original Investigation
Abstract
Aim: Osteoporosis (OP) appears as a result of reduction in bone mass and deformation of micro structure is widely found in postmenopausal period. Research into etiologic risk factor and by taking required precautions may assist to prevent negative results of OP. We studied the effect on the T scores by dual energy X-ray absorbsiometry on postmenopausal women with family history of OP and fracture. Material and Method: We retrospectively examined 200 postmenopausal women aged between 42 and 84. We studied the demographic properties, age of menopause started and the family history of OP and fracture. The bone mineral density from spine and femur were measured using DEXA. We compared T scores between the positive and the negative family history groups. Results: There was a negative correlation between menopause duration and T scores (p<0.05). T scores were smaller (p<0.005) among women with family history of OP or osteoporosis fracture compared to women with negative family history. Conclusion: According to our results we suggested that the family history of OP or osteoporosis fracture can be an osteoporotic risk factor for postmenopausal women.(Osteoporoz Dünyasından 2006;12:60-3)
