What Are Taiwan Senior High School Students Being Asked to Read? The Quantitative Analysis on the Reading Lists of High Schools in Taiwan

The research objects were the reading lists of Taiwan senior high schools from academic years 105 to 107 to understand their distribution as well as similarities and differences. The authors, publication years, and publishers in the reading lists were analyzed. A total of 403 reading lists from 140 Taiwan high schools were analyzed. Results are listed as follows: (1) Regarding creative forms, the lists contained 634 fictions, whereas non-fictions were primarily American literature (515). (2) Regardless of the sources of reading lists and academic, Chiang Hsun was considered the most critical author in the high school reading lists. (3) In terms of publishers, most of the reading lists were published by China Times Publishing Company. (4) The publication years of the books ranged from 1970 to 2019 and concentrated on 2015-2017. Based on the aforementioned research results, suggestions were proposed in hopes of increasing relevant personnel’s understanding of reading lists content and helping plan appropriate reading lists.
