Assessments by family doctors about their knowledge of violence acquired during their professional training

Abstract

Introduction: Insufficient content on violence in the training of the Comprehensive General Physician (MGI) could have a negative impact on the knowledge and skills of these professionals to address this problem. Objective: To describe the considerations of a group of family doctors about their knowledge and skills for managing violence, acquired during their training as specialists. Material and Methods: An observational, descriptive, and cross- sectional study was carried out with a population of MGI specialists (N=71) from two polyclinics in Playa municipality between 2020 and 2023. A survey was applied, the analysis of which was carried out through descriptive statistics, and the Chi square test, considering p<0.05 as statistical significance. The informed consent process was carried out. Results: The results show that 85.9 % of the specialists considered the content on violence issues received during the specialization process insufficient. A the clinic report having more knowledge about the axes of the action programs against violence than their colleagues (32.6 % vs 7.1 %), which was similar to what was found regarding the theories that explain the pathogenesis of violence (27.9 % vs 7.1 %), being these results statistically significant. The specialists feel little prepared about the practical and intellectual skills for managing violence. Conclusions: Given the low preparation of the MGI specialists on the approach to violence, a training strategy could materialize as an alternative solution to improve the teaching-learning process related to violent behavior
