Quioscos y puestos de venta de prensa en Madrid y otras cuidades españolas hasta la Guerra Civil
Abstract
As the 19th century progressed, so did the sale of periodicals through newsstands and kiosks in Spain, reflecting the new role of the press in the society of the time. The emergence of a growing range of publications of all kinds issued by institutions pursuing particular modes of expression caused some concern in certain sectors of society. This prompted a recourse to various coercive mechanisms that necessarily affected such outlets at a time when they still lacked a firm footing. This article examines press, bibliographic and archive records in an investigation of the development of sales points and their communicative possibilities as an essential part of the history of the Spanish press.
