The present study is about the not-said in “Barren Lives”, a novel by Graciliano Ramos (1938), now in its 93rd edition. The aim is a hermeneutic study of the work fundamented and enlightened by the concepts of philosophers such as Gadamer, Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger and Nietzche; and commentators as Santiago Kovadloff, Ernildo Stein, Danilo Marcondes, among others. Our intention is to appeal to reasoning to analyze the lack of reason, the reasoning emptiness, a primary critical silence due to the human condition having as background the bareness found in the novel by this remarkable writer from Alagoas.
