Demographic and Histopathological Characteristics of the Eyelid Tumors
Abstract
Aim: To evaluate the histopathological and demographic results of the tumors which are surgically removed from the eyelid. Methods: The histopathological results of 213 cases, who underwent eyelid mass excision between 2012 and 2016, were retrospectively analyzed. Age and sex, mass localization, and histo¬pathological results were recorded. Results: The study included 215 patients with a mean age of 50.87. The mean age of the women was 50.55, and the mean age of the men was 52.85. The mean age of those with benign features in the eyelid tumors was 49.7 while the mean age of those with malignant feature was 79.1. 63. 3% of the tumors were detected in females, and 36.7% in males. 64.7% of the eyelid tumors were located in the upper lid and 30.7% of them were located in the lower lid. It was observed that 80 % of tumors were originated by epidermal, 8.8 % by adnexial, and 11.2% by other tissues. Conclusion: As a result, we observed that the majority of the patients’ eyelid tumors were benign. Squamous papilloma was the most common of benign features, and basal cell carcinoma was the most common of malignant features. It was concluded that the exact diagnosis of the eyelid tumors can be made histopathologically.
