Curcumin capped magnetic nanoparticles. Synthesis, characterization and photoinactivation activity against S. Aureus
Abstract
Magnetic nanoparticles have become one of the most promising systems for drug delivery of different bioactive molecules, due to their low toxicity and relative easy synthesis. Among the molecules that could benefit from this types of carriers is curcumin, a polyphenol that is known for its antimicrobial activity and for its capability to produce reactive oxygen species when irradiated with blue light. The synthesis and characterization of curcumin capped magnetic nanoparticles is presented in this work. Results showed a strong interaction between the polyphenol and the magnetic nanoparticles, affecting their structural, photochemical and magnetic properties. Likewise, results showed that combination of curcumin capped magnetic nanoparticles and blue light irradiation could lead to S. Aureus inhibition up to 60%.
