Highlights • Institutional CP can facilitate better solutions and decisions in a situation of complex conflictual planning. • Participatory CP can have limited impact on decision-making and conflict resolution, e.g., in strategic planning. • An analysis of knowledge claims can enable identification of the specific grounds for conflict escalation. • Knowledge use practices may be used as a lens to better understand conflicts within strategic planning processes.
