Purpose. The article deals with the communicative (verbal and non-verbal) means of expressing understatement, which are typical for the speech of the contemporary English. The author analyzes behavioral response to the situation, which has its own specific features, regulated by the norms and traditions of British culture and verbal means aimed at harmonious, conflict-free communication. Methods. The author uses the sociolinguistic analysis method to study characters’ speech by means of sociolinguistic categories. Results. Based on the analysis, it is established that the intentional pause, ‘It’s like’ moderator, emotional containment - means of expressing understatement, are more often found in the speech of young and older women belonging to the middle class. Practical implications. The results of this study can be used in theoretical and practical courses on intercultural communication, stylistics, translation and semiotics.
