Uma agremiação a serviço do bairro: O Vila Isabel Futebol Clube (1910-1941)

Abstract

In 1910, Vila Isabel FutebolClube was founded. Our intention is, when discussing the trajectory of this association, to dedicate attention to its participation in the outlining of a profile for the neighborhood in which it was located, to perceive how its actions intertwined with the surroundings of its headquarters. The option to investigate this sports association was due to its corporate structure. Its members came from the middle and upper strata who lived in Vila Isabel or nearby, not belonging, however, to the highest socioeconomic strata who lived in the most valued neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro. The club was an expression of an “intermediate elite” in the city. In addition, it had to deal with the social heterogeneity of the region where it was located. “Small, but with big initiatives”: this is how a chronicler referred to Vila Isabel on the occasion of its tenth anniversary. We believe that these characteristics allow us to perceive something of the city’s societal movements, as well as their insertion in spatial records.
