THEORY OF BASIC HUMAN VALUES AND THE BRAZILIAN REALITY
Abstract
This study aimed to test and validate the refined version of the Theory of Values by Schwartz et al. (2012), applying the Value Profile Questionnaire (VPQ-5) to a sample of undergraduate students in Business Administration. A total of 406 undergraduate students from public and private universities participated in this study, most of them with an average age between 20 and 24 years. In this sample, the VPQ-5, tested through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), did not show satisfactory levels of internal consistency. In this way, a new factor structure was proposed carrying 43 value factors with the support of exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and multidimensional scaling (MDS). The proposed model of values was called VADMC because it deals with the Values of Administration students from Santa Catarina and presents 12 values that are grouped into 8 different dimensions. The data demonstrated the direction of important values in the direction of sustainable behaviors of the students, such as benevolence, tolerance universalism, nature universalism, equity, innovation, and tradition, and values present in the 3rd level dimensions: respect, environmental conservation, indulgence, and legacy.
