Profile of fishers in foz of Araguaia river, Brazil
Abstract
The objective of this work was to evaluate the profile of the fishermen of the mouth of the river Araguaia. 562 fishermen belonging to six colonies were interviewed, being these of the colonies of Araguatins (Z-1), Aragominas (Z-24), Araguanã (Z-3) located in the state of Tocantins and Xambioá (Z-33); Piçarra (Z-55) and São Geraldo do Araguaia (Z-88) in the state of Pará. It is observed that artisanal fishermen are constitute mainly by sexy male, with low education, with an average of five members in the family, for the most part have house and vessel own. The fishermen are in great part associated with the a colonies of fishermen and receives an average of three minimum salaries. It was also observed that most works in activity over six hours per day and its main fishing tool is the gillnet. In the general context, it is understood that small-scale fisheries is a way of life of these people which assign a unique identity, which should be preserved.
