This literature review aims to assess contraceptive methods used in dogs and cats, as fertility control solution before the large increase that has taken place over the years in relation to the number of animals wandering company causing problems and veterinary public health. For both, the methods discussed were immunological agents, hormonal therapies and surgical procedures, emphasizing the advantages and disadvantages of their use, based on physiological individuality of estrous cycles of each species. This review seeks to demonstrate the particularities between dogs and cats, also addressing changes generated by the use of contraceptive methods and some amendments made to the option of surgical methods.
