ABSTRAK Volume sampah yang semakin meningkat merupakan isu yang ditemui di kota dan desa seiring meningkatnya populasi dan aktivitas manusia. Sampah perlu dikelola dengan baik agar tidak berakibat buruk bagi kehidupan manusia. Penanganan sampah memerlukan keterampilan khusus, dan penelitian ini mengkaji upaya penanganan sampah oleh perempuan tani di Desa Benteng, Kabupaten Bogor. Tujuan penelitian meliputi mengetahui persepsi masyarakat tentang lingkungan, menganalisis pengetahuan dan keterampilan masyarakat dalam mengolah sampah menjadi pupuk organik, dan menganalisis tingkat kepedulian masyarakat tentang lingkungan demi kelestariannya. Penelitian dilaksanakan dengan teknik penilaian tentang sampah dan lingkungan oleh 30 responden wanita tani tanaman obat keluarga (toga), dilanjutkan dengan kaji tindak. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keluarga tani di Desa Benteng mempunyai persepsi yang positif tentang lingkungan dan mendukung pemeliharaan alam, namun persepsi tersebut belum diikuti oleh tindakan nyata. Aksi bersama berupa praktik bersama mengolah sampah menjadi pupuk organik (kompos) merupakan salah satu forum mendorong masyarakat mengelola sampah. Sampah yang diolah menjadi pupuk organik dimanfaatkan perempuan tani memupuk tanaman obat keluarga (Toga) yang ditekuni oleh wanita tani. Aksi bersama tersebut perlu disertai penyuluhan tentang pengolahan kompos untuk usaha toga. Hal ini dapat memantapkan difusi-adopsi dalam pertanian berwawasan lingkungan. ABSTRACT The volume of garbage keep increase and needs waste management to prevent human life from hazard. The issue of increasing volume of garbage has also found in Kampung Gunung Leutik, Benteng Village, in Ciampea, District of Bogor. Kampung Gunung Leutik has been known as Kampung Toga (herbal village). The women group run Toga expect that the village can exist as eco-village with characterised by ability to conserve the ecosystem through processing organic waste into compost. The research objectives are to know community perception about environment, to analyse ability of the members of women Toga group to process waste into organic fertilizer (compost), and to analyse the community awareness to the environment conservation for the sustainabilty. A number of 30 respondents were interviewed for their perception to the environment and to manage the waste. Assessment was followed by concrete action in composting conducted at the research site. The research results showed that perception of the community to the environment is positive and care to the environment, but this perception has not followed by concrete action. The women farmer’s group felt the needs to make organic fertilizer (compost) from waste, then they involved in a co-learning through a training to make compost. The compost was used to fertilize the medicinal plants that cultivated by the women. Further extension on composting is needed to enhance community willingness to support diffusion-adoption in waste management by making compost as organic fertilizer to support their agribusiness in herbal family medicine.
