In the edited volume Genre et jeux vidéo (2015), Fanny Lignon gathers twelve essays by scholars from France and elsewhere that she convinced to analyze the intersection of gender and video gaming. Since the topic was relatively unexplored in France, most of the French-speaking contributors were either gender theorists or video game specialists, tasked with approaching the more unfamiliar topic. Lignon also includes several translations of papers originally written or published in English. Most commonly, the contributors were less concerned with the process of making video games than with the games themselves and what they may bring about. While science fiction was not part of their analytic framework, the ways in which the intersection of gender and video games were explored hold lessons for the intersection of video games and science fiction. The frequent references to science fiction and fantasy video games may serve as a reminder of the central position of science fiction in the video game imagination.
