Patrick Strong, Shoulder Pain

Abstract

Abstract This is an OSCE case. Mr. Patrick Strong is coming to ambulatory clinic with presenting complaint of pain when moving left shoulder. Mr. Strong works at WalMart in the Garden Center and his job is to re-stock the shelves with gardening tools and to maintain the plant garden show area. He likes playing basketball, and in middle and high school he was an avid basketball player. In his senior year, during the last game of the season, he injured his left shoulder but it has not bothered him since then. Since last week, Patrick can hardly use his left arm because of the pain. He feels abrupt pain when he tries to use his left arm, especially to lift heavy merchandise or plants at work. On arrival, patient's vitals are as follows: BP 135/75 mm Hg, HR 74 bpm, RR 12/min, T 36.6 C. On examination, tests for rotator cuff injury are (−), Speed's test is (+). The rest of the physical examination is unremarkable. Past medical history is non-contributory to the current presenting complaint.
