Notes on alterity and autochthony in African philosophy: the neo-animistic proposal of Ruy Duarte de Carvalho
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to situate the ideas and reflections of the intellectuals of the Portuguese speaking African countries in the debates on autochthony and universalism in African philosophy. We address issues raised in two texts written in the last years of life of the Angolan author Ruy Duarte de Carvalho (1941-2010): Time to listen the ‘other’ while the “other” still exists, before there is only the other ... or pre-Manifesto Neo- -Animist (2008) and Neo-Animist Decalogue (2009). We have inserted his proposals into a broad spectrum of debates about the reflections produced by Africans and Africanists such as ValentimMudimbe, AchilleMbembe, PaulinHountondji and Amina Mama, among others.
