V. Verhola's artistic heritage includes works of differen genres: opera, vocal-symphonic creations, music for film, pop music, arrangements of folk works etc. But the favorite sphere of his creation is instrumental music. In this article we have focused on the analysis of the Sonata for bassoon and piano, written in 1973. Approaching a genre like the sonata requires from a composer, at the beginning of his path, a certain degree of confidence, a sufficient level of professionalism and creative thinking. V. Verhola's Sonata for bassoon and piano is a traditional tripartite cycle: Allegro risoluto, Largo and Allegro ma non troppo. The three parts reveal their belonging to different genres and even fields of music. Thus, in the first part, rhythmic structures characteristic of jazz can be noticed, part II denotes the features of a meditative ballad, and part III includes rhythmic-intonation elements borrowed from instrumental folklore.
