HISTORY OF TWO COUNCILS HELDAT CONSTANTINOPLE IN 1156–1157 AS DESCRIBED BY D. M. SUDNITSYN

Abstract

In his article, the author discusses two excerpts from the dissertation of D. Sudnitsyn The Reign of the Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Comnenus from the Point of View of Church History, which had been defended in 1896 at the Moscow Theological Academy and which is conserved in the Manuscript Department of the Russian State Library. The fi rst excerpt is from that part of the dissertation which discussed the history of two councils held at Constantinople in 1156–1157. The second excerpt presents the criticism of F. Uspenskijʼs opinion, found in his Sketches from the History of Education in Byzantiumand concerning the infl uence of the dispute between Platonists and Aristotelians on theological movement in Byzantium. Both excerpts are of great interest in the context of the historiography of the disputes which took place in the years 1156–1157
