Histopathological evaluation of oral cavity lesions
Abstract
INTRODUCTION: In this study, we retrospectively reviewed the patients who underwent histopathological examination with oral cavity lesion and interpreted the results according to the literature. METHODS: The records of 662 patients who applied to Dermatology and Otorhinolaryngology Clinic at İstanbul Bağcılar Training and Research Hospital between January 2008 and January 2016 were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were evaluated according to age, location of lesions, frequency of lesions, benign, premalign, and malign lesion frequency. RESULTS: The most common lesion was the lower lip (292). The first three most common lesions were benign [Irritable fibroma (120 patient, 18,12%), mucocele (98 patient, 14,8%), pyogenic granuloma (67 patient, 10,12%)]. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor. The most common was the lower lip (43, patient, 6,49%), followed by the tongue (9 patient, 1,35%). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Oral cavity lesions are often benign. However, in patients with malignant and premalignant lesions rate it can not be underestimated. Therefore, histopathologic examination plays an important role in the planning and prognosis of patients by providing early diagnosis.
