The present work is part of the research project called “Youth and History”, supervised by Luis Cerri and Gonzalo de Amézola. Its aim is to deal with the current situation of History teaching and learning in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. The project develops from the recog-nition that there is a problem in “the lack of systematic knowledge about the results of history teaching, the characteristics of conscience in history and the political culture of young people”. The article focuses its analysis on the answers to the questions about military governments, democracy and the future of young people, presents in a survey given by 15 and 16-year-old students from different schools in Argentina in 2008. The purpose of the questions was to get closer to the students’ knowledge on such topics and the role of History teaching in process. At the same time, records of secondary school lessons in the city of La Plata are used as a way of getting to know the quality of the actual methods that are taken on the teaching practice of History in the classrooms.
