Cultural semantics: a study about the assignment of senses to words and language expressions
Abstract
In this article, we intend to demonstrate that the cultural aspects of a language community, which influence the assignment of meaning to words and expressions of a language. For this, we have adopted studies that refer to Cultural Semantics. Thus, we use as the theoretical contribution studies of Eagleton (2005), Chau (1995), Ferrarezi (2013, 2008), Fossile (2013), Oliveira (2009), Garcia (2001), among others. This study is a bibliographic order and the approach is qualitative, in order to promote a dialogue between diff erent theoretical information anchored to the Cultural Semantics and clear examples. We start from the premise that the pair, culture vs. language establishes a concomitant relationship and are inseparable elements in the constitution of the senses that are subjected to words and to language expressions. With regard to the basic education, we conclude that the Cultural Semantics contributes to mother-tongue teaching, mainly valuing linguistic and cultural aspects that the student brings with itself.
