Regarding the complexity of the issue, the mathematical models become increasingly important for implementation of Water Framework Directive, particularly in terms of pollution control and management of water resources quality in river basin areas. The models can be used in all the phases of WFD implementation, especially in evaluation of effects of pressure on water status, analysis of future actions effects on improvement of the aquatic ecosystems status and defining of cost-effective monitoring programs. The paper stresses the importance and role of application of mathematical water quality models in implementation of the WFD and a number of models and a software system being developed at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Nis is presented, as well as the fundamental s and principles on whose basis the model and the program system have been developed.
