Abstract

Prof. Dr. N. Subbu Reddiar delivered lectures on “Kalingattuparani” in the series jointly conducted by Sri Venkateswara University and Pakkala Tamil Sangam which has been compiled into a book titled “Parani Discourses”. (Parani Polivukal). The six-day series has featured professor's lectures titled, Arimugham, Kadai Thirappu, Peigal Ulagam, Varalatru-Kurippugal, Parani Kattum Suvaigal, and Mummanikal. This article is the study of the professor's language personality, which is expressed in these lectures. Generally, personality can be referred to as a superior trait that distinguishes one from others. The personality traits can be found in society, sports, science and politics and can be expressed sometimes as a source of power and a hatred of the ruling but the personality expressed in the fields of literature and language are special to use and stimulate the thought process. In that way, Kalingattuparani’s Sol suvai (word power), Porul suvai (meaning), and Nayam (quality) as explained by Professor Subbu Reddiar stand as an example of his language authority. Perasiriyar explains how “Kalingattuparani” has followed the Tamil literary tradition evinced in “Nannul”, “Munnor mozhli porule yandri avar mozhliyum ponnae pore potruvom”. Perasiriyar's lectures are examples of how a language can act as an instrument for exchanging ideas if expressed by a person who is proficient in that language. The introduction to “Kalingattuparani”, the reason for the name Parani, Parani grammar, the appearance and origin of Parani books, the situation in which it appeared, the elements of Parani books and a lot of other information are given by Perasiriyar Subbu Reddiar never ending as from Akshaya Patra, such is the language personality. Perasiriyar approached through review method, descriptive method, comparative method, historical method, analytical method, and synthetic research method in this research article in his parani discourse on “Kalingattuparani”, Hence, this article delineates the linguistic verve of Perasiriyar Subbu Reddiar.
