New conditions of reception in the eighteenth century: joking aspects in El lazarillo de ciegos caminantes, Alonso Carrió de la Vandera
Abstract
El lazarillo de ciegos caminantes (1776-5), of Alonso Carrió de la Vandera, is a traveller’s tale which response to the general ambience of modernizing reform at the end of the eighteenth century in the Spanish colonies in America; however, the text shows a group of humorous stories which make it difference from others contemporary enlightened production. This article analyses it in its internal function in the text –to illustrate, guive advise, argue or to forewarn and keep the readers’s attention– and proposes its possible correlation with the new reception conditions.
