The purpose of this article is to give a progress report on the Brazilian electoral system, and more particularly on the composition of the electorate in a country where the political parties legally have the monopoly of the candidatures for the elective stations. Indeed, this social composition partially explains the number and the profile of the candidates to the candidature, and then of the invested candidates. In the Brazilian electorate, the general weakness of the level of education relativizes the range of the political messages, whereas television plays an essential part to transmit the message of the candidates and parties.
