This paper discusses specialized discourse and specialized discourse analysis from the particular point of view of ‘specializedness’ and its study within English studies. It argues that, by often assuming that specialized discourse is a fundamentally self-explaining category and/or that its general definition may be naturally derived from any of the particular varieties of discourse under study, traditional specialized discourse analysis raises some aporetic questions as to the very notion of specialized discourse, specifically regarding the conception of discourse as opposed to language and the conception of specializedness. It seeks to overcome these difficulties by proposing to redefine specialized discourse in such a way as to derive its specialized status and properties from the specialized domain where, it is argued, specializedness is constructed.
