This paper presents the main ideas and findings of my dissertation, entitled “The traditional theory/practice dichotomy in the teaching of translation: its manifestations, its theoretical matrix and its effects for translator training”. Three sources of data are used: curricula from various translation courses, questionnaires of teachers’ and students’ views about the relation between theory and practice, and publications about translator training. From a deconstructive standpoint, the purpose is to show not only that students, teachers and researchers see theory as problematic and clearly distinguished from practice, but also that such a view may have damaging effects on the training of would-be translators.
