<i>La Celestina</i> as a model in Rafael Chirbes' <i>Crematorio</i>
Abstract
Chirbes expressed his interest in La Celestina mainly in the article «Sin piedad ni esperanza. (Revolución literaria en La Celestina)», but also in promotional interviews for En la orilla, certain entries in his unpublished diaries, A ratos perdidos, and personal reading notes made in two editions of the work kept at the Fundació Rafael Chirbes (that of Peter E. Russell in 1991 and of Francisco J. Lobera et alii in 2000). In this article, Chirbes’s impressions of Rojas’s text are compared with the structure and monologue of Crematorio; with the types, relationships and register of its characters; and with its callous tone and environment.
