Synthetic wind climatologies

Abstract

A strategy was developed to calculate the unknown forcing for the simulation of climatological wind roses with meso- and microscale models. It was applied to an area with heavy orographically structured terrain. The frequency distribution of the supra-scale wind, which acts as forcing for the simulation of surface wind roses, was calculated from measured distributions of the surface wind and simulated surface winds by a variational method. The method is applicable to all types of meso- and microscale models.
