Since ten years counseling occupations are growing in various fields of public intervention in Belgium. Their recent emergence is directly related to the implementation of new public policies. This text puts two of these occupational groups into perspective: the counselor in vocational accompaniment from the public-service of employment and the education counselor in the field of teaching. The comparative analysis concerns the genesis of the occupational groups, the licenses, mandates and professional identities, as well as the specificity of their work with the public. The authors show that these new counseling occupations mainly develop on the model of the consulting profession, within which the diagnosis and the treatment constitute the two fundamental acts.
