The process of digitization within institutes for the protection of cultural monuments is being undertaken as one of the measures by which to align undertakings with accelerated technological development and the needs of modern global society. Taking into account the fact that digitized documentation that is lacking in terms of quality or organization has limited value to initiating the process of protection of immovable cultural assets, likewise to other activities, it is necessary to convert the documentation into electronic form and prepare it for permanent storage in compliance with legal regulations, guidelines and national standards that have been harmonized with international standards. An adequate approach to the digitization process first of all requires familiarizing all participants in the process with the legal basis for its implementation. This paper, therefore, primarily deals with the analysis of legal frameworks under which the digitization process will be implemented within institutions responsible for the protection of immovable cultural heritage throughout the Republic of Serbia.
