Abstract

The Italian front of the First World War is normally given scanty attention by foreign historiography, so much so that it was defined ‘the forgotten front’. Nevertheless, it constituted a considerably form of lightening in favor of the better-known fronts in east and west. Italy had been an ally of Germany and Austria-Hungary for over 30 years, but sided in 1915 alongside its age-old rival, France, obliged to deal with the problem of organising a military force in the most co-ordinated way possible, the latter being led by a single inter-ally command. They thus managed to fight side by side, although becoming friends was not ever feasible.
