Hot-dip galvanizing is one of the most widely applied zinc coating techniques due to its excellent corrosion resistance and low cost. However, this technology still has shortcomings such as high energy consumption, limited size of the workpiece to be plated, and unsuitable for field plating. Therefore, in this paper, other zinc coating techniques that could be alternatives to hot-dip galvanizing were discussed, and the lifes to first maintenance and life cycle costs of these zinc coatings were compared. Results revealed that hot-dip galvanizing was irreplaceable for its advantages in performance and cost. Nevertheless, hot-dip galvanizing consumed a large amount of zinc ingots and energy during the life cycle, which directly or indirectly produced a large carbon footprint. So this technology might be restricted due to the national carbon neutral goal. Some practical applications of alternatives to hot-dip galvanizing were developed under carbon neutrality target. Finally, the most promising alternatives to hot-dip galvanizing under carbon neutrality target were prospected.
