Cropping and Grazing Pressure on the Riverine Zone of the Pendjari Biosphere Reserve. Animal husbandry, arable agriculture and poaching are in rapid expansion in the Pendjari Biosphere Reserve of Benin. This study presents the land-use activities in Pendjari Biosphere Reserve and its impact on wild fauna. The "Line transect" method was used. Arable agriculture in Pendjari Biosphere Reserve is in expansion (3 km) inside the Biosphere Reserve along Tanguieta (Benin) -Parma (Burkina Faso) and Tanguieta-Batia roads. The highest expansion is observed in Pouri (5 km) and Tanougou (4.5 km). During the dry season (1996), large numbers (7050) of transhumant livestock graze in the area. In Pendjari Biosphere Reserve, there is a good representation of big ungulates excepted waterbuck and a difference in animal densities. Animal densities and meeting rates are low in Biosphere Reserve areas put under cultivation and located near villages.
