MARCADORES CRONOLÓGICOS Y CARACTERÍSTICAS CONSTRUCTIVAS EN EL SITIO TOLA GRANADA, UBICADO EN EL PIEDEMONTE OCCIDENTAL DEL ECUADOR (Chronological Markers and Constructive Characteristics at the Tola Granada Site, Located in the Western Piedmont of Ecuador)
Abstract
Recientes investigaciones arqueológicas realizadas en el sitio Tola Granada, Ecuador, aportan nuevas evidencias que han permitido identificar horizontes temporales de ceniza volcánica y determinar algunas de las características constructivas de los montículos artificiales ubicados en el piedemonte occidental de los Andes septentrionales. Mediante la caracterización de la columna estratigráfica, se han definido dos procesos de estratificación: el primero es natural y corresponde a capas de piroclasto o tefra; el segundo es antrópico, integrado por bloques de arena y arcilla compactada registrados cerca de una de las rampas de acceso y, posiblemente, en la base del montículo artificial. La información ha permitido definir la cronología relativa de los principales contextos arqueológicos y corroborarla con los resultados de las dataciones absolutas. ENGLISH: Recent archaeological research conducted at the Tola Granada site, Ecuador, provided new evidence that has allowed us to identify temporary horizons of volcanic ash and to determine some of the constructive characteristics of the artificial mounds located in the western piedmont of the northern Andes. Through the stratigraphic column characterization, two stratification processes have been defined: the first is natural and corresponds to pyroclastic or tephra layers; the second is anthropic, composed of compacted sand and clay blocks recorded near one of the access ramps and, possibly, at the base of the artificial mound. The information has made it possible to define the relative chronology of the main archaeological contexts and to corroborate it with the results of absolute dating.
