Characterization, metal chelation and anti-cancerous activity of extracelluar melanin pigments produced by Pseudomonas mosselii STSGRDS1
Abstract
Melanins are ubiquitous pigments which are naturally produced and distributed throughout the biological kingdom. Pseudomonas mosselii strain STSGRDS1 producing melanin was used in the study. STSGRDS1 melanin reported to have metal chelating potential of increasing effect with increase in the concentration of melanin. The anti-proliferative activity of the purified melanin by MTT assay had IC50 value 87.15µg/ml towards A431skin cancer cell line for standard 5-flurouracil and also showed substantial apoptotic activity. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) against bacteria and fungi were also evaluated. Hence, the purified melanin having anti-proliferative properties can be exploited in therapeutic applications.
