Les Arméniens d’Égypte dans la première moitié du xixe siècle : le secours aux plus démunis au défi de la migration
Abstract
At the beginning of the 19th century, Armenians moved to Egypt from the central lands of the Ottoman Empire, deeply renewing a small community that had long been present in Egypt but had little structure. While some of the migrants, very close to Muhammad Ali, Governor and later Viceroy of Egypt, were remarkably successful, this was not the case for all. Helping the needy was one of the community's responsibilities under the millets system. It contributed to the creation of the new community, both in relation to other communities in Egypt and to Armenians in the Ottoman Empire.
