Analysis of the relations between Brazil and the European Economic Community (EEC)in terms of their past and present importance for Brazil’s foreign policy. The article provides a historical overview of the various phases of the process of European integration and Brazil’s different positions relative to them. It then proceeds to a synthesis of almost 50 years of Brazil-EEC relations and, finally, focuses on the most problematic outstanding issues. It also looks at the dimension of cooperation in these relations, particularly since the 1995 signing of the Framework Agreement on Interregional Cooperation between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur and between the EU and Brazil with the resulting increase in contacts.
