Emergency physicians work on the cruise ships
Abstract
Working on the cruise ships is considerably specific and different for the physicians, comparing with shore side practice. Distance from hospitals where patient can have complete treatment, different age, race and behaviour of crew and passengers, limited space and number of medical staff, complete administration and management of the hospital, control and care about sanitation and epidemiologic conditions, training lessons given to crew in first aid, are just the part of this job, additional to regular medical practice. All of mentioned tasks require maximum of the available modern equipment as well as efficient and knowledgeable team work of medical staff. Primary task is anyhow initial treatment and stabilization of critically ill and injured patients, where emergency medicine specialist presents the most rational solution for ships physician job.
