Risk factors for patient safety on hemodialysis
Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Continuous improvement of the quality of health care and patient safety is an integral part of everyday activities of healthcare workers, healthcare associates and all other employees in the healthcare system. OBJECTIVE: To determine factors that influences the safety of patients on hemodialysis treatment METHODOLOGY: The electronic database MEDLINE was used to find empirical works RESULTS: Factors affecting the patients' chances of hemodialysis include: malfunction of dialysis machines, quality of dialysis water, control of infections, falls of patients, implementation of drug therapy and ineffective communication. CONCLUSION: Mistakes occurring during dialysis treatment cannot be completely eliminated, but their frequency can be reduced to a minimum. Continuous investments are needed in the education of medical staff as well as patients in order to be actively involved in the treatment. In order to increase security, it is necessary to continuously monitor and review procedures in order to identify potential risks in time.
