The analysis of the diachronic evolution of the wetlands makes it possible to seize the measurement of the interface between the social processes and the natural processes which characterize the interactions between water and the society. In other words, it returns to the question of the relation of the man to his territory (i.e. with the way in which it controls it). Indeed, for a long time, management wetlands in Nord-Pas-de-Calais Area were not apprehended for itself, but through risk of flood (hazard) or agrarian practices. Their disappearance, gradually brought the scientists and the managers of the territory to be wondered about their past, but also on their identity or their memory, in order to take into account their potential space implications. The emergence of the sustainable development is not either completely foreign there.
