Music teaching departments of universities in Turkey are programmes that train music teachers by taking students with a special talent exam. This situation has caused some effects on the preparation of students for music teaching programs faculties of education of fine arts high schools. This research, which is a qualitative case study, aims to examine the effect of the first 800.000 threshold in TYT, which is a prerequisite for the music teaching aptitude exam, on students and the status of fine arts high schools on the training of students for the music teaching programme in line with the views of teachers. For this purpose, data were collected from 44 fine arts high schools in order to determine the number of students who graduated from fine arts high schools in the 2022-2023 academic year and placed in the music teaching department. On the other hand, in order to reveal the effect of the 800.000 threshold on the students and teachers of fine arts high schools, semi-structured interviews consisting of 6 questions were conducted with 7 culture and 7 vocational course teachers working in these institutions. The data obtained were categorised using descriptive analysis method and presented in tables consisting of frequency values. In the study, it was determined that 9% of the students graduating from fine arts high schools passed the first 800.000 threshold in TYT and 86% of these students were placed in music teaching departments. Accordingly, it was determined that the number of quotas of music teaching department programmes decreased. The majority of the interviewed teachers stated that they considered the 800.000 threshold necessary on the grounds that it would contribute to the training of qualified teachers, but it was concluded that the threshold caused negative situations such as stress, future anxiety and careless behaviour in career choices. Based on the results of the research, recommendations are presented.
