The Centre International de Recherche sur les Esclavages (International Centre of Research into Slaveries – CIRESC), home of two research programmes (the European programme “EURESCL” of FP7 and the ANR programme entitled AFRODESC), bases its scientific and heuristic practices upon a working collaboration between various international research groups of different historiographical perspectives. This relationship has permitted our researchers to analyse “situations of slavery” and “post-slavery” in American, European and African societies, and to understand and explain the social, political and identitarian issues arising from the categorization and designation of individuals who may, or may not call upon the history of slavery to define themselves.
