Background: Climate change generated by the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide CO2 among others. The study focused on identifying the determining factors that have an impact on these emissions. Methodology: The applied methodology based on the qualitative and quantitative criteria used by documentary research based on secondary sources of information related to the Kaya factors, the performance of coal in Colombia and the results of these emissions at a global and national level, which indicate an increase in CO2. Results: Colombia, in the 2012-2021 period, increased total CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by 10%, as well as the behavior of its per capita emissions increased in the last decade, although, during the same period, Colombia presents a slight reduction in terms of CO2 emissions per US$1,000 of GDP. Conclusion: it can be affirmed that the productive sector must evaluate its ability to balance social, economic, and environmental aspects, that is, its sustainability, through environmental management plans, in addition to its productive capacity.
