Sallustius between political and intellectual life
Abstract
Abstract: By weaving the most appealing stage in the Roman Republic into his writings, Sallustius appears to be one of the striking historical figures who began his life as a politician in 55 BC and as a new man in the Roman state. As such, he was greatly disillusioned with politics, which in his opinion was not it was the true achievement and human value of virtue. His decline in politics prompted him to become a historian, as if this latter was a continuation of his career and a kind of revenge towards his opponents. He embarked upon writing about history around his forties wherein his political career came to a close. From this standpoint, we will endeavor in the current article to shed the light on the personality of Sallustius along with his political and intellectual life as well. Keywords: Sallustius; the Roman Republic; politics; literature; history
