French literature was included in the secondary school curriculum of the Republic of China. The classicization of French works and authors reflected the intellectual structure and cultural vision of Chinese textbook writers of the time. We will take the example of the inclusion of Jules Verne's works in Chinese textbooks during the New School System (1922-1928) to explore this issue. Three main points emerge from our study: first, the inclusion of Jules Verne's works in textbooks was due to external factors such as the formation of a modern intellectual community, the reform of culture and the school system, and the development of vernacular literature in China; second, the rewriting of Jules Verne's works by the textbook editors conveyed the literary concepts of the time; and third, the inclusion of Jules Verne's works in the Chinese language and literature textbooks signaled the establishment of modern culture in textbooks and the establishment of culture in textbooks.
