Though subject to multifarious Islamic influences, Popular Islam in central Asia is construed by local authorities as a consensual counter to radical Islam. In particular an islamized but modernizing form of shamanism has encountered some success. Picking and choosing as they have always seen fit, neo-shamanic figures even take on a post-modern colouring.
