Jon Snow : le nouveau roi Arthur de Game of Thrones

Abstract

Even if many historical sources have been pointed out for the creation of George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones (HBO, 2011 - ), such as the Wars of the Roses, some of its literary influences remain unexplored. Hence, an important part of the TV series can be seen as a rewriting of T.H. White’s famous novel, The Once and Future King (1938-1977), depicting the youth, life and death of King Arthur. Indeed, the character of Jon Snow clearly appears as an avatar of King Arthur: his journey throughout the episodes of Game of Thrones corresponds to the different steps described in White’s novel, establishing a parallel between the bastard son of Eddard Stark and the legendary king. In this perspective, The Once and Future King gives new opportunities to interpret George R. R. Martin’s literary work and its adaptation on screen, through the character of Jon Snow, from his origins to his possible future.
