In French cinema, the tradition of direct sound is important. It is an integral part of the artistic staging of the film. But the process of capturing direct sounds is weakened everywhere. Neutralize certain noises to prevent them from constituting noise pollution and succeed in capturing those which are likely to constitute interesting cinematographic sound matter: these are the main challenges faced by sound engineers on a film set. When the work consists of capturing intimate noises, the difficulty of recording is redoubled, especially since the sound engineer and his perchman are not always in a strong position on a film set. How is the work of mastering the sound environment and taming the unexpected articulated? Based on an ongoing sociological survey of sound professionals in the cinema, the author studies the methods of mastering sound on a stage and its social challenges.
